How To Care For Your Tires

Few things can affect the longevity of your car's lifespan more than your tires. That's why proper tire care is such an essential aspect of your vehicle's maintenance. If you play your cards right, any new set of tires you put on your car will last you an incredibly long time and keep you and your family driving safely for the long haul. Below find some of Antero Automotive's favorite tips and tricks to help your tires last like never before.

Tire Rotations:
It's widely known that your front tires tend to wear out much faster than your back tires. This is due to your front tires' constant turns while you drive, which your back tires do less. That's why it's necessary to rotate your tires regularly! You'll want to rotate your tires roughly every 5,000 miles, though your vehicle's factory specifications may differ slightly. Frequent tire rotation will allow all your tires to wear evenly so you won't need to replace the two in front more often than the others.

Tire Pressure Check:
There is no universal tire air pressure that every car should be at. Each vehicle has its own specifications set by their manufacturers. You should look up the recommended tire pressure in your owner's manual. You can also find this information on the white or yellow sticker inside the driver's side door jamb. Check each tire's pressure individually with a pressure gauge. If any of your tires shows a higher or lower pressure than is recommended by 5 PSI or more, add or release its air accordingly. This will decrease wear on your tires, and allow for the smoothest ride in your car possible.

Tire Tread Check:
Your tire's tread is how your tires maintain traction on the road while you drive. Tire tread is even more important when the way is wet and slippery. While this is one of your tires' most critical parts, your tread will eventually wear down over time. When this happens, you'll need to invest in a new set of tires. To check your tire tread, you can perform the simple penny test. Pop a penny inside of your tire's tread with Lincoln's head facing downwards. If his head is even partially covered by your tread, your tires are still fine to drive. But if you can see the top of Lincoln's head, your tread is too worn to operate, and its time for new tires.

Wheel Alignments:
You can't always avoid road hazards, and hitting bumps or potholes with your tires can cause your wheels to go out of alignment. Even on flat surfaces, road wear can eventually knock things out of alignment. When this happens, excessive wear is put on your tires, which reduces their lifespan. That's why you should take your vehicle into a trusted auto mechanic to have your wheels aligned.
